Project Blog News

A few more changes and upgrades have been made, as well as introducing a few more features on both the frontend and backend. The following are the changes made:

  • Fixed in issue with the blog script that would send out notification e-mails with unintended backslashes beside symbols. This has been resolved and shouldn't happen any longer.
  • Added stats for both the new Phone Book and The Pile. On the menu it now shows how many phone contacts are in the system, and how many images are being hosted by The Pile.
  • Comment's are now automatically formatted based on linebreaks submitted by the user. What this means, is that if you press enter and go down a line or two, this will now show up in your comment, whereas before, line breaks were ignored and only HTML was used. HTML is still fully supported for users who are logged in, but now you don't have to use P or BR tags to create line breaks. Keep this in mind when pressing enter in your comments, it will show up in your text.
  • Users now have the ability to change their passwords by clicking on the 'Change Password' link on the menu under accounts. Once changed, the user will be prompted to log back in (to update their cookies). I've tested the new feature and it seems to work without any problems.
  • Fixed a few visual/display issues.
  • Updated and improved some coding.

People seemed pretty excited about this project, as I've got quite a few comments, and messages on MSN about it. I've worked to eliminate some of the initial bugs found by users, as well as adding some things. Here is the list of changes/fixes since release:

  • Increased each users space to 5mb each. Also, increased max image size to 750kb.
  • Fixed an issue that would cause the website to display incorrectly on non-maximized browser windows.
  • Added additonal information to be displayed when a user adds a new image (the uri to the image for example).
  • Major: Created a system to ensure other users images are not ovewritten if another user tries to upload an image of the same name. If the image already exists, your Excessive Rambling user id is added to the start of the image name. If that image already exists as well, the upload fails and you are instructed to rename the file yourself and upload again.
  • Added a basic gallery feature, where users can view thumbnails of their images, with the image name displayed underneath. Thumbnails are displayed 9 on each page, at 160x120.
  • Fixed a few minor coding issues.
  • Added or modified a few visual aspects.

The gallery idea for viewing images with the Pile is a really good idea. :]

I had planned it all along, but I wanted to get the project released, and I knew creating the gallery feature would push it back a day or two, so I released it without it (and added it on today).

Yesterday a few people were telling me it would be cool to have a gallery, to quickly see what images are what, and so I had to tell them it was planned, but since people were so quick to mention it, I figured I shouldn't put it off any more, and just do it.

The gallery I've created isn't the final version, as I plan on adding a 'remove' link on each picture; I also plan on adding captions to each picture and a few other gallery-related things. I think I can safely put that off for a few days though.

My private entry option is gone? You'll have to explain that one a bit.

Also, of course I considered PM as a feature to create with this scriptm but I knew that it would be severely underused, so it wasn't worth my time. Secondly, e-mail addresses are required to join the site, so every user has a reliable means of contact. You can simply view her profile, and click on her e-mail address!
