Guitar Hero Contest

So the magical Guitar Hero competition at Pandemic was last night and as I suspected it was horribly unorganized and not set up in anyway in order to promote actual competitiveness. There was only one guitar, something which made the competition take much longer than it should have. Basically there was a song picked, and all the entrants took their turn playing that one song, and then their score was recorded (along with their style, which was actually worth more than playing the song at all.. give me a break).

ME!

The way it should've been set up, is that all entrants were randomly paired, the pairs go up and play a face-off, and the winner moves on to the next round (and the difficulty goes up one) and whoever makes it all the way is the winner. It would've taken maybe a quarter of the time. Anyway, the whole points for style was really annoying, and while I thought it was okay you get bonus points for style, they retardedly made the style points worth more than actually playing through the song. Like a really good play through on Alice in Chain's Them Bones can net you around 90,000 points. If you get 10 style points, that's 100,000 points. .... So.. technically I could've tried to get 10 style points and never played the song, and I would've got a better score than someone who 100% the song and never made a mistake. I would've much preferred a Guitar Hero competition, not a "who can look like more of a retard holding a fischerprice plastic guitar" competition. I guess that's just the gamer in me, where in an actual competition, it should always come down to skill. Chess competition? Doesn't matter what clothes you wear. Anyway....

The first round was Alice in Chain's Them Bones on Medium. Each entrant would play through the song, and their score would be written down and then some dude made up a number and said it was their style points. I'm pretty sure I came in second in this round because I got the third highest points (because stupid star power wouldn't deploy no matter what) but I got 8.5 in style because I played the guitar with it back behind my head. So.. I got around 92,000 points for the song, and 85,000 points just cause, which put me in second place overall.

  • OMG It's Darcy!
  • This was for Mark's style points!
  • This is Blair rocking out!
  • This gives you an idea of what it was like!
  • This is the screen!
  • The second song was Freezepop's Less Talk More Rokk on hard. The song was a lot faster than Them Bones, and there were a few hammer ons, so most of the less skilled players failed the songs (Mark, Darcy, some girl, some dude). Michelle made it through, and me, Blair, red shirt guy and big dude made it through. I actually decided at this point to never try to shake the guitar for star power, and instead hit the select button at a time that was convenient, and I also decided not to look like a retard and miss notes in the process, so I just concentrated and I ended up deploying star power three times and getting a really high score.

After that song, they added up everyones score, and the top four moved on to the final round. It was Blair in first, I was in second (cause I only got a 3 for style cause of my concentrating), Eric and big dude. So a few people (specifically people NOT in the competition) had retarded ideas for a final round, and we, the finalists, were talking about what would make a good final round, and we decided that a moderately difficult song set on Expert would be the best way to end it. I suggested Killing In The Name of because it was the first moderately difficult song that popped in my head that wasn't too hard, and was nice and rocking, so I suggested that and everyone seemed to agree, so the final round was Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name on expert.

    ME!

Much like on Freezepop's song, I just sat and concentrated, but truth be told, that's what everyone did. No one jumped around, no one moved really, because on expert, if you lose concentration for even a second, it's nearly impossible to get back into the song and recover and if you miss like ten notes in a row you fail. So everyone was pretty still, and trying their best. We drew straws to see who would go first, and I drew the smallest, so I went first. I concentrated and used the select button for star power, and I managed to get 97% with a score of around 320,000 points. Everyone else after me didn't get higher than 120,000 points, and since no one really jumped around, everyone got about the same style points. They added up the points, and..

    I won!

I got to pick my prize of either $25 in cash, a $50 gift cert for a tatoo, or two cd's and a poster. I picked the $50 gift cert because of my awesome math skillz.

The whole night was pretty nerve racking, and while I think the people who were good at the game (mainly the finalists) thought that the tournament would've been a lot better without style points (just skill), it was pretty fun.

    ME!

We got pizza on the way home, and then I slept. Then I woke up... now I'm writing.

Today's pretty horrible, and blah! So WOO! I won bitches!

That sucks that it was so unorganized. Maybe next time talk to the people who decided to have the thing and make it more organized and get the word out, etc.

    Congratulations on winning though. ^_^

I agree that the style point idea was really dumb and shouldn't have been done. I wanted a face off too, where it came down to skill, and your total points. Maybe note-streak could have been a bonus or something but it would have been a lot better and less lame. Maybe we can have another one where it'll matter if you can play well. Congrats though, YOU ROCK!
