Christmas Tree Eve
Today was actually a pretty good day, an out-of-routine type of day but a good day none-the-less. A day of school, friends, tradition, being social-ish and fun.
I woke up at 9:15am and finished up my research paper, as I hadn't quite finished it when I went to sleep last night due to my migraine and all that, but I had enough time this morning to finish it up and get it printed. I also had to put the finishing touches on my case study, but that was pretty quick and easy, so no big deal. Calen came and picked me up around 11:30am, and we got to school a little bit after Noon, where we attended communications and handed in our fourteen page research paper.
Afterward, we were all starving so we went to Oasis for lunch... we had about an hour so there was no rush. I got a grilled chicken sandwich with fries... it was decent enough but it was over-priced. For the sandwich, fries and a drink it was over $10, so I probably won't get it again, but it tasted alright and it was a real grilled breast, so at least the food was quality. We sat and ate for the forty minutes or so and eventually headed to our client/server class, where we were the 8th group to present to the teacher, and when I say present, I don't mean a presentation... he simply stands behind us and asks us to do certain things with the project that we made, to prove that it works properly. While I knew everything worked, I was actually really nervous throughout the presentation, for god knows why. It was over eventually, and I got a drive home... the regular classes of fall 2011 were over and done with, and now I only have three exams left... Saturday (tomorrow), Wednesday and Thursday.
As you all know, and I'm sure you do, today is the annual Christmas Tree Eve, which is when Ally comes over to help me put up the Christmas tree as a family. We always watch one or two Christmas movies, share little snacks and listen to some Christmas music. It's always nice and this year was no different. So anyway, when I got home I had to start you know, cleaning, organizing my thoughts, etc, all that fun stuff. I made a quick list and walked to the grocery store, picked up a few things; I had a couple ideas of what I wanted to make for snacks, specifically I wanted to make a nice potato soup, and I also wanted to melt some brie on garlic bread, but I wanted a specific style bread that No Frills didn't have, so I just bought the cheese, the potatoes and the other few things I needed.
Once I got home, I put on the soup and then did the dishes, swept and did the litter, I'm sure regular readers have my daily chores memorized at this point, and yet I still feel the need to type them out individually each time.. I'm not sure why. I decided to make my own bread, a rosemary thyme focaccia, but I think my yeast is too old because it didn't really rise as much as I had wanted it to, given the time I gave it, but I was becoming impatient so I just baked it, making it a pretty dense, heavy bread, but I suppose that's generally how focaccia is.
I made potato, cheddar and chive soup for my dinner (with a roast beef sandwich) and the soup turned out very well, very, very well. I had a bowl, and Ally had one and when Kurt got here he had one too, so I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. My bread was also pretty tasty, and I cut it into strips and baked brie on to them with some garlic butter, and those were yummy too!
Ally came over around 5:30pm or so, as I was still cooking, but she brought her dinner so she ate and I finished up what I was doing. Kurt was at work until around 7:30, so while we waited, Ally and I watched our classic Christmas movie Die Hard, which is awesome as always, and enjoyed our dinners together. Once Kurt got here, I put on some random Christmas music and we put up the tree together as a group, which looks nice I might add, and I finished up the snacks, served an eggnog with bailey's for myself and Kurt, and a bailey's and coffee for Ally, and we put on our second feature, Scrooged. I love that movie... love Bill Murray... it captures some of the important emotions that come along with a holiday like Christmas, a holiday that is family centric. After the movie was over, we sat around talking for a bit, mainly about tv shows and video games. Ally loves the game Dragonage and was talking about it and it made me want to play pretty badly. We talked and laughed for a bit and around 12am they called a cab and left.
It feels good to have someone to rely on, to have things that you can rely on. I know that no matter what is going on or anything, she would figure out a way to do this with me, or be there for me if it was for something else. It's nice to have that there, to know that at the times when I'm at my lowest, there is at least one person I can fall to for help.
Tomorrow I've got an exam at 10:30am, so I have to go to sleep really soon because it's already late. Then after that exam I have to go to work. The exam tomorrow will probably be the hardest of the three exams that I have, and I didn't have time to study tonight because of the tree thing, but I'm sure I'll be fine. I'm really not in the mood to go to work afterward, but you can always win I guess. I can't wait for a couple days of free time, to finally put my mind back together now that I don't need to think about school as much.
Wish me luck.
