The Toronto Zoo

We went to the Toronto Zoo today, in a somewhat spontaneous decision to do something with our day off. We don't usually (or ever) have the same day off together, and this week both of our days off fell on the same two days, so Bekki really wanted to do something special, so we thought about it and came up with the idea of going to the zoo. Well, really, it was Bekki's idea originally, as I've never really been to a zoo beyond small petting zoo's or whatever, so I didn't have a particular inclination to going to a zoo, but I had a lot of fun at the Victoria petting zoo, so it seemed like a decent enough idea, and any excuse to spend time with Brekkerson and the new camera was fun, so let's do it!

The ride there was pretty good... we had spent the majority of our driving time on the honeymoon listening to XM Radio, specifically the hair metal station Hair Nation, which was... you know, all hair/glam metal, so last night I downloaded a random top 100 hair and glam metal playlist and synced it to the ipod. I read a chapter of my book, and played a little bit of Final Fantasy 8 on my vita, and generally just enjoyed Bekki's company as we drove.

I think the zoo experience could be split into two distinct phases. The first half, before the Canadian area, was fun, interesting and generally enjoyable. After that, after the giant hill that was the Canadian area, my leg was fucked, and the rest of the trip was filled with pain, pain, discomfort, and pain. It felt like my foot was twice the size and on fire, or numb, the back of my leg had nails punched into it, it just... sucks. Not sure if I mentioned it, but something is wrong with my non-tumor leg lately, so... yeah, that sucks.

So my zoo experience... I would say it fell short of my expectations. From things I've heard from my friends (Mark) and from what I've heard about zoo's over the years, I expected something different than what I had experienced today. That's not to say I didn't have a good time, or didn't enjoy seeing the animals, but it just wasn't what I thought it was going to be like. My main gripe would be that the animal exhibits only had one or two animals in them, so... a lot of the time they'd be sleeping, or off in the distance minding their own business. I expected more animals I guess, in each area, and I expected more educational content, like... a lot more information on each animal, where they came from, the role they played, what they ate, and cool facts, but only a few of the animals had information plaques, and those that did usually just compared the animals skull or jaw to another random animal.

Secondly and perhaps most importantly, the people... all of the people, all of the people everywhere, pissed me off and bothered me and enraged me. I hated all of them, everyone. People making retarded comments, or screaming or crying, or fat overweight parents standing in the middle of the walkway as their kid climbs the rocks that say no climbing and then yelling as loud as they can in random directions trying to talk to their kid, "IT'S OVER IN THE CORNER, IT'S OVER IN THE COOOOOOORNER". Fuck off. People stopping dead in their tracks in the way of everyone, blocking stairs, blocking entryways, doors... people walking on the wrong side of the walkway, people rolling their god fucking stupid piece of shit screaming, crying infants on the wrong side of the walkway, and why even bring an infant to the zoo, I really don't think they can appreciate the animals.

Ugh... anyway, yeah... didn't enjoy the people.

Lastly, the problem with my leg got really bad about halfway through, and I could barely think about anything else. My foot was burning and my leg killed, and I could barely pay attention to anything we were looking at.

Anyway, I enjoyed the trip to an extent, and I'm glad we went, but it wasn't exactly what I expected.

The drive home went well and we stopped for Thai food.

I'm super tired now, my leg hurts and I have a headache. Tomorrow is... get my day to day life in order, figure out how to manage my time and feel okay and relaxed.

That was my day, love Bekki and my dog and my cats.
