Handbrake: App of the Day

Handbrake

Handbrake is a wonderfully small, yet unimaginably useful app for OS X that rips DVD movies into MP4, AVI or other formats. It's an extremely simple appication to use; simply place the DVD in the drive, open it, select the title (section) of the DVD you wish to rip, pick the video and audio settings and click Rip.

It can encode the video as ffmpeg or XviD, and can encode the audio as mp3 or ac3, and you can tell it how large you want the file, and it will adjust the quality of the audio and video so it fits into that size. Basically the standard right now for cappers online is 700mb full length movies encoded with XviD/AC3, and Handbrake let's you do that, and it takes about two seconds to configure. Once it's set up, it takes between a half hour and an hour to rip a full movie, depending on your system.

Using Handbrake, you can rip 6 DVDs and fit them onto one DVD-R, and that proves how useful it is. I've borrowed about fifty DVDs from Mark and just ripped them all to my external drive.

I thought that this app should be shown to everyone, especially anyone into movies, collecting movies, or for any other reason it might be useful.
