A Map, A Plan, A Note

I haven't been writing as much lately, and I think that's because I've been keeping myself quite busy... so busy, and it's a good kind of busy. I feel productive, and like life is happening, rather than this time last year life was stagnant and not moving anywhere, but things are going places, I'm doing things, experiencing things that I've never experienced before and I'm not scared or even anxious.

I'm not sure what I've written, or what I've talked about, so I'll just pretend like I've been writing this whole time.

I worked today from 12pm to 9pm, and it was pretty easy. We have a new boss I guess... his role is not defined that well, and no one has talked to me about any of it... so it's kind of weird but whatever, I can still do my job and things are okay. Anyway, it was a dinner buffet for about 80 people and it was Allen and I to get it all ready and put it out, and then Allen went and carved and I worked the buffet for the duration of it, which was fine. It was only busy for a few minutes and most of it was pretty easy, so I can't complain.

I'm leaving to go to Nova Scotia in two days, or less if you think about it. I leave Sunday after work... Bekki will just pick me up and drive home, we'll do the last minute packing as fast as we can, and then off we go. We're driving to my Mom's so she can take the car after we go to the airport, and she'll be borrowing the car for the week that we're gone.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but originally we were only going on vacation for four days or something... we were leaving at the same time... Sunday evening, but we were going to be coming home Friday morning, so we'd only have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to do anything. We had a lot of things planned, and I've personally never really been on a vacation like this before... and when we told people we were going for four days, people would often ask... why only for days? And there wasn't really an answer. I think when we originally had talked and planned the trip, I personally put importance on being home for the weekend. See if you can notice a pattern... leaving right after I'm finished working a full weekend at Windermere, and coming home on Friday just in time to work a full weekend at Windermere. So... if you are playing along, the pattern was that I was putting the needs of Windermere above all else, worried about making it stressful or difficult for them on the weekend, so I figured it wasn't even an option to take a weekend off. I've worked every weekend for the last four years or something, without a single one off, so the idea just seemed foreign to me.

There was one day last week where we just said, "it's too bad we were staying for a few more days" and we just kind of looked at each other and said, "why aren't we?" and we immediately took steps neccessary to make it happen. Julie gave me the time off without hesitation and was awesome about it, and Bekki got the day off after one very upsetting day/night of being left hanging, being told that it was "unlikely" they could go one weekend without Bekki working, but then the next day she got the time off... that's a whole other entry containing a large number of swear words, so I'll leave it at that. We did have to pay a slight fee to change the flight home, so it sucks we didn't just decide this right from the get go, but... if this vacation goes well, and there is a chance to do it again in the future, we'll think it through better. It worked out to be something like $23 a day (for each extra day) to change the flight, and to me I'll pay $23 to stay in Nova Scotia and away from here for longer.

So we extended our trip so that instead of coming home on that Friday morning, we're coming home on the Monday morning, giving us all of Friday, Saturday and Sunday extra, so we made more plans, even bigger plans, and it feels much more like a real vacation. Now on Saturday we're driving in to Halifax, which is about a four hour drive, checking into the Delta Barrington right in the middle of downtown Halifax. From there we are walking 300 metres to The Carleton to see Danny Michel at the Halifax Folk Festival, which is at 9pm. Yes, we are going to see mother fuckin' Danny Michel while we are on vacation, and that is a sign that we were meant to stay there later, because without the extension, we wouldn't have been able to. After Danny Michel, we can take the two minute walk back to the hotel and spend an awesome night in one of the finest hotels in Halifax. In the morning, we'll get some breakfast and then make the drive back once we're comfortable and ready to go. We'll get home and relax (that'll be the Sunday), and make sure we're packed and Monday morning we make the flight home.

I am very excited for our vacation... it's going to be great, and I'm successfully avoiding getting stressed out about the money that's being spent. I do have a moment here or there where I kinda get anxious or freak out inside, but I can usually calm myself down, realize that I deserve this vacation and the things we're doing on it, and that's that. I'm finished another semester of school, with good marks. Bekki is finished her school... we got a car, we have plans for the future, we deserve this.

I guess that's all I've got for now. I should pack but it's 11pm and I open tomorrow so I really gotta go to sleep soon. Tomorrow after work from like 5pm to bed time, I'll be packing because it's the only time that I have. Just need to get through Saturday's shift (7-3) and get through Sunday's shift (7-.. 2? maybe 3?) and that's it for eight days or something. So excited!
