Sauvignon Blanc

A few days ago Bekki and I did a flight of Sauvignon Blanc from three different wineries, and two different regions. It's always fun and interesting to put a single grape varietal side by side and see how terrior and wine makers can shape the flavors in such dramaticly different ways.

Legends 2016 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve

This wine was sneaky, because through tasting it, I believe it should've been labelled a Fumé Blanc, as it must have been aged in oak, for it was buttery, smooth, well-rounded and complex. At a price of $18, this wine is a crazy value, and an amazing introduction to how nice fumé blanc can be. 4/5.

Babich Black Label 2020 Sauvignon Blanc

We don't drink non-Ontario wine, but in an attempt to be more educated on international wines, as well as hearing comments and reviews from a podcast I listen to (Two Guys Talking Wine), I really wanted to try some varietals from countries where that varietal is it's "big thing" and nothing is more New Zealand than Sauvignon Blanc. I expected typical grassy, cat-pee on the nose and decent flavors but this wine was a huge surprise. It was tropical, fruity but not sweet. Peaches, gooseberries and just.. it's hard to describe. It was a wonderful surprise and not what I was expecting. A bit on the more expensive side for a bottle of sauvignon blanc, this bottle was priced at $24, and available in the vintages section of the LCBO. 4/5.

Meldville 2018 Sauvignon Blanc

Derek Barnett is one of my or perhaps my absolute favorite wine maker, and I've been enjoying his wines for over ten years now, so opening a bottle of Meldville wine is always an easy choice, especially because he prices them so affordably without sacrificing any quality. This sauvignon blanc when put beside these two other wines was a lot more subdued, almost hard to get anything out of on the nose, and quite restrained when tasting. It was good, and drinkable, and subtle and elegant, and probably wasn't fair to compare it to what seemed like a fumé blanc and a unique, tropical tasting burst of creativity. I could see enjoying it with a meal, or sipping on it's own, but it didn't rise above the others as many of Derek's other wines do. Very reasonably priced at $19. 3/5.
